Definition of silicon carbide

Silicon carbide is a synthetic carbide with a molecular formula of SiC. It is usually formed of silicon dioxide and carbon at a high temperature of 2000°C or higher after being energized. The theoretical density of silicon carbide is 3.18g/cm3, Mohs hardness is second only to diamond, between 9.2-9.8, microhardness is 3300kg/mm3. Due to its high hardness, high wear resistance, high corrosion resistance, and high temperature strength, it is used onto a variety of wearable, corrosion resistant and high temperature resistant mechanical parts. It is a new type of engineering ceramic material.

There are two types of silicon carbide ceramics, one is alpha-SiC, which is a hexagonal system, it is a high-temperature stable type. The other is beta-SiC, which is a face-centered cubic system and it is a low-temperature stable type. β-SiC can be converted into α-SiC crystals in the temperature range of 2100-2400°C. Silicon carbide ceramics have high-temperature strength, high-temperature creep, high hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, high thermal conductivity and high electrical conductivity, and good thermal stability. They have a good high-temperature structural ceramic material with a sense of 1400°C or more. It was mainly used as refractories and abrasives, such as steelmaking spouts, furnace linings, kiln furniture, and grindstones. It was later used as a high-temperature structural material or heating element in certain technical fields, such as rocket exhaust nozzles, gas turbine blades, electrodes of magnetic fluid generators, electric furnace heating elements, etc.
